What is an eSIM?
A SIM that lives inside your phone: no plastic card, no shop visit. You scan a QR code once, the plan appears in Settings, and it starts working when you land. Your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls.
How it works
Which network works where in Vietnam?
Three carriers run their own 4G and 5G networks; every VietSIM plan runs on one of them, including the Local, Wintel and SkyFi plans that ride on a host network. Facts from the carriers' own publications.
State-owned carrier headquartered in Hanoi. 4G across the country, 5G in the larger cities since October 2024. A common pick for routes into the northern mountains and along remote coasts.

4G nationwide, 5G in the larger cities since March 2025. The Local and SkyFi plans ride on the MobiFone network, so they cover the same places at a lower price.

VietSIM does not rank the carriers against each other. Coverage notes come from the carriers' own network pages and the plans we sell; a hotspot works on all three networks.
Staying connected where you are going
City-by-city notes on signal, Wi-Fi, the apps that need a local number and where the carrier counters are. Written from carrier and official sources, with the source list at the end of each guide.

Java to Bali by Train and Ferry: A 10-Day Route with a Realistic Data Plan
The workable Java-to-Bali route is a west-to-east train line: Jakarta or Yogyakarta to Surabaya by rail, then a train or bus to Banyuwangi, the Ketapang–Gilimanuk ferry across the strait, and a bus or car to Denpasar and Ubud. Book the long train legs and the ferry through the operators' own channels before you travel, and buy an Indonesia eSIM before you fly so tickets, maps and accommodation contacts stay reachable during the transfer days when Wi-Fi is least reliable.

Singapore to Malaysia with One eSIM: The Johor Bahru Border Checklist
If your trip includes both Singapore and Malaysia, buy one regional eSIM rather than two separate plans — the VietSIM regional plan covering Singapore and Malaysia shares a single data allowance and validity period across both countries, so nothing resets when you cross at Johor Bahru. Check the plan's included-destination list before you pay: a Singapore-only eSIM will not work in Malaysia, and a Malaysia-only eSIM will not work in Singapore. For a Singapore-centred trip with a JB day trip, the regional plan is the simplest option; for a longer stay in each country, compare it against two local plans on price per day.

Philippines Tourist SIM Registration: Documents, Expiry and Travel eSIMs
If you buy a physical SIM from a Philippine operator such as Smart or Globe, you must register it with photo ID before it works — and that registration is tied to that SIM, not to you. A travel eSIM sold before departure is not a local Philippine SIM, so the local registration step does not apply to it. If your trip is short and you mainly need maps, messaging and bookings, a Philippines eSIM is the simpler purchase; if you need a local number for calls, plan for the registration queue and the paperwork.

Bali IMEI Registration: Local SIM vs Travel eSIM Rules
IMEI registration in Indonesia is about the handset, not the SIM: a phone that has never been registered on an Indonesian network can lose local mobile service after a short grace period when used with an Indonesian SIM. The registration is done at customs on arrival or through the operator, and it needs your passport and the phone's IMEI. If you buy a travel eSIM for Bali instead, you are roaming on a foreign profile rather than activating a local Indonesian SIM, so you skip the registration queue entirely — and you can set it up before you fly.

Laos Train Wi-Fi: What to Save Before You Board
Don't count on Wi-Fi on the Laos–China Railway. Treat the train ride as an offline window: download your ticket and any pickup details before you leave the hotel, save an offline map of your arrival town, and carry a Laos eSIM so you have data the moment you step off at Vientiane, Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang. A data-only eSIM keeps your own number for calls and messages while giving you a local data connection for maps, rides and messages.

Phnom Penh Airport SIM Cards: Prepare for Techo Arrivals
Phnom Penh's international flights now arrive at Techo International Airport (IATA code KTI), which replaced the old Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) for commercial service. If you want data the moment you land, the reliable move is to install a Cambodia eSIM before departure rather than queue at an airport counter whose stock, opening hours and registration requirements you cannot verify in advance. Buy a data-only Cambodia eSIM, install it at home, and switch it on when the plane lands.

Help with installing and using your eSIM
Step by step for iPhone and Android, in 19 languages, each article with the date it was last checked. Every guide also works offline once opened, for the moment your phone has no connection.
Open the help centre How to install your Vietnam eSIMInstall the eSIM before you fly, on Wi-Fi or mobile data. On iPhone open Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM and scan the QR code on your order page. On Android open the SIM manager and choose Add eSIM. A QR code can usually be installed only once, so never delete the eSIM after installing it.
Turn on your eSIM in VietnamWhen you land in Vietnam, turn the VietSIM line on and choose it for mobile data. Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it cannot run up charges. Install the eSIM within 30 days of buying it from us; if your trip starts later than that, write to us first.
eSIM not connecting in VietnamStart with the phone settings, not the eSIM. Check that the VietSIM line is on and selected for mobile data, turn Data Roaming on for that line and restart the phone. If there is still no internet after 10 minutes, email us your order link, phone model and screenshots.
Refunds and lost QR codesEmail contact@vietsim.com with the link to your order page, or the email address you paid with and the payment date. An eSIM that does not work in Vietnam and cannot be fixed is refunded in full. Approved refunds are sent to your card within 5 business days, and your bank may need 5 to 10 more to show them.
The best prices on Vietnam's own networks, and nothing to worry about
Every VietSIM plan is a Vietnamese carrier plan on Viettel, VinaPhone or MobiFone, the networks people in Vietnam use every day, not a roaming profile routed through another country. That is why a month of unlimited data costs $15.88 here and $69.00 or more at the international eSIM brands.
Lower than every eSIM brand we compare, checked daily
Unlimited data for 30 days is $15.88 at VietSIM against $69.00 at Airalo, $73.90 at Holafly and $71.99 at Saily, read on Sep 21, 2026. Per gigabyte, every plan here is cheaper than theirs. Prices are checked every day, and the price you see is the price you pay, tax shown before checkout.

Vietnam's own networks, the same signal as a local SIM
Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone plans with 4G across the country and 5G in the larger cities where the plan and the phone allow it. No roaming charges, no foreign detour, and the hotspot works on all three networks.

Covered: full refund if it doesn't work, help in 19 languages

Leave a review on TrustpilotQuestions about eSIM in Vietnam
Asked the way people type them. Each answer stands on its own.

Does Vietnam have eSIM?
Yes. Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone all issue eSIM, and VietSIM sells those operator plans directly, with no middleman markup, as a QR code that arrives minutes after payment. International resellers charge more for the same networks; a carrier eSIM bought at a counter needs your passport and a shop visit.
How to use eSIM in Vietnam
Buy the plan on VietSIM, scan the QR code in Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM, and keep the line off until you land. Then enable data on that line and turn on data roaming; it is a local line, so there is no roaming fee. Viettel covers the most of the country; VinaPhone is the alternative in cities.
Where to buy eSIM Vietnam
The most direct route is VietSIM: plans from Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone sourced straight from the carriers, delivered as a QR code in minutes and priced without reseller markup. On arrival you can also buy at carrier counters in the arrivals halls of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, with your passport.
Vietnam eSIM unlimited data?
Yes. Viettel and VinaPhone sell daily unlimited plans, and VietSIM lists them beside the fixed-data ones: pick the number of days, and every day carries unlimited data on the local network instead of a monthly cap. The plan page shows the price for each duration, and the QR code arrives minutes after payment.
What is the best eSIM for Vietnam?
Buy where the seller works with the carriers directly. VietSIM sources plans straight from Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone, so prices stay at local levels and support can see your plan. Viettel suits the northern mountains and the islands; VinaPhone and MobiFone plans often include a Vietnamese number, which ride apps ask for.
How to activate eSIM Vietnam
Scan the QR code from VietSIM in Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM on iPhone, or Settings, Connections, SIM manager on Android. Label the line, enable data on it and turn on data roaming for that line. VietSIM plans activate on install, and the QR arrives minutes after payment; support replies if a step sticks.
