Quang Ninh, northern Vietnam
A Ha Long Bay eSIM gives you data on the road from Hanoi and in the towns around the bay, and it keeps working when you return to shore. Download the bay map and your cruise details before you board, because signal among the islands is not something to count on.

The four moments when a working line changes the day.
Download the bay map and the cruise ticket before the road leaves the city. The drive is the easy part.
Check in, message home and note the boat name and cabin number somewhere offline.
Put the phone in a dry bag. Take photos, but do not rely on a live map between the islands.
Data returns in Ha Long town or Cat Ba. Upload the day then, not from the deck.
A guide to the places the phone will be asked to work, and what to download before you get there.

Mixed
Signal follows the coast and fades as the boat turns into the islands. Load the route before departure, not at sunset.
Thin
Expect little or no data inside caves and between the towers. A downloaded map and a screenshot of the itinerary are the reliable version.
Mixed
Cat Ba town has a working connection. Lan Ha has the same towers with a fraction of the traffic, and a thinner signal.
Most people come by road from Hanoi on the expressway, which bus platforms cover densely. Van Don airport in Quang Ninh is also on the government's list of border gates that accept an e-visa, which makes flying into the province possible if the schedule suits.
Two alternatives add water and take away engines: Lan Ha and Cat Ba to the southwest, and Bai Tu Long to the northeast. Both are bookable the same way as a Ha Long cruise, and both keep the same limestone towers.
The bay is not a place to discover that your map needs a connection. Vietnam's 4G reaches 99.8 percent of the population, but that figure counts people, not open water between islands, and the towers do not carry a signal of their own.
Save the cruise ticket, the operator's phone number, the pickup time and an offline map of the bay. Keep the phone in a dry bag and let the camera work offline. When the boat comes back into range, the day's photos upload in a few minutes.
A day on the water, estimated for one phone that is mostly taking photos.
| When | What the phone does | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Port check-in, messages, last downloads | ~60 MB |
| Midday | Photos in the caves, notes, no live maps | ~40 MB |
| Afternoon | Camera, translation, a few messages | ~50 MB |
| Evening | Upload the day once the boat is in range | ~80 MB |
| One day, total | ~230 MB | |
The total is low because the signal is. The data that matters is the data you saved before boarding.
Prices come from the live catalogue in the currency shown. One plan covers the bay, Hanoi and the rest of Vietnam.

Near the shore and on the road, yes. Among the islands the signal thins and inside caves it usually stops. Save the cruise details and an offline map before you board and treat coverage on the water as a bonus.
Yes. Cat Ba town has a working 4G connection. Lan Ha has the same limestone towers with far fewer boats, and a thinner signal the further you go from the island.
Most visitors take a road transfer on the expressway from Hanoi, booked through the bus platforms that cover the route. Van Don airport in Quang Ninh is another option and is on the e-visa list of accepted border gates.
No. A Vietnam plan covers the whole country, including Quang Ninh and Cat Ba. The limit is the signal between the islands, not the plan.
The same eSIM covers every city on this list.
