Your first day, connected

The four moments when a working line changes the day.

  1. At Tan Son Nhat

Switch the eSIM on before the taxi rank. The airport is close, but the queue and the traffic are not.

  2. Bus 109 or a car

Check the next bus and the pickup point. At rush hour the same ride can take twice as long.

  3. District 1

Pin the hotel door. Streets change name at district borders, and drivers need the ward as well as the street.

  4. After dark

Book dinner, check metro times and keep a ride app ready for the way back.

Where the signal matters in Ho Chi Minh City

A guide to the places the phone will be asked to work, and what to download before you get there.

District 1

Strong

Dense 4G across the centre and 5G in parts of it. Cafes and coworking spaces are built for laptops and calls.

Ben Thanh Market

Mixed

Signal is fine on the roundabout and patchy inside the covered halls. Step outside to load a map or call a ride.

Metro Line 1

Strong

The line runs 19.7 km from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien with 14 stations. Check times and connections above ground before you go down.

Cu Chi Tunnels

Thin

The road out is covered; the tunnels are not. Save the booking, the pickup point and a map of the route before you leave District 1.

From Tan Son Nhat to District 1

Tan Son Nhat handles international and domestic flights, and sits only about 6 to 8 km from District 1. Vietnam Airlines puts the drive at 15 to 30 minutes, while Vietnam Tourism warns it can pass 50 minutes at peak times. The distance is short; the traffic is the variable.

Bus 109 leaves the international terminal for Ben Thanh Market, every 15 to 20 minutes according to Vietnam Airlines, in about 40 minutes plus waiting. Bus 152 serves the domestic terminal. Taxis wait at the official ranks and add an airport toll. Grab, Be and Xanh SM all list the city, with Vietnam Airlines putting a ride-hailing car at about 130,000 to 170,000 VND to the centre.

  • Turn the eSIM on inside the terminal: the pickup point is outside and the app needs data.
  • Keep the hotel address in Vietnamese, including the ward and district.
  • Agree the fare or use the meter; the airport toll is added to the total.

Getting around with a phone in your hand

Metro Line 1 opened on 22 December 2024. According to JICA, which funded it, the line is 19.7 km with 14 stations from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien, three of them underground. Ride-hailing covers the rest: Grab, Be and Xanh SM all operate here, and Xanh SM runs electric cars and motorbikes.

Day trips need a different kind of data. The Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta are both reached by road and boat, and both spend time where a signal does not. A downloaded map and screenshots of the booking do more than a live search once you are there.

  • Download the Ho Chi Minh City map for offline use; offline Google Maps gives driving directions only.
  • Save the Cu Chi or Mekong booking and pickup time as screenshots.
  • Check that your plan allows hotspot before you plan to work from a cafe on one connection.

Questions before you fly

How do I get from Tan Son Nhat to District 1?

Bus 109 runs from the international terminal to Ben Thanh Market in about 40 minutes plus waiting, every 15 to 20 minutes according to Vietnam Airlines. A taxi or a ride-hailing car takes 15 to 30 minutes outside rush hour and can pass 50 minutes at peak times.

Can I buy a SIM card at Tan Son Nhat airport?

Yes. The airport has kiosks selling SIM cards and you need your passport to register one. An eSIM installed before the flight means data is ready when the plane lands.

Is there signal inside the Cu Chi Tunnels?

Do not count on it. The road out and the visitor centre are covered, the tunnels are not. Save your booking, the pickup point and an offline map before you leave the city.

Can one eSIM cover Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi?

Yes. A Vietnam plan covers the whole country, so the same eSIM works in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and the islands without a new purchase or a roaming charge.

The same eSIM covers every city on this list.
