Your first day, connected

The four moments when a working line changes the day.

  1. At Da Nang airport

Switch the eSIM on before the taxi rank. The ride to Hoi An is about 28 km and the app needs data at pickup.

  2. Into the old town

Pin the hotel, then walk. Several streets are closed to traffic in the evening, so the last block is on foot.

  3. Tailor and lanterns

Save reference photos and measurements in one album, and book the lantern boat from the riverbank.

  4. An Bang or My Son

Screenshot the beach directions or the tour pickup; the ruins are not the place to look for a signal.

Where the signal matters in Hoi An

A guide to the places the phone will be asked to work, and what to download before you get there.

Hoi An old town

Strong

4G holds across the old town, including the Japanese Covered Bridge and the riverside. Expect slower data when the evening crowds arrive.

An Bang beach

Strong

The beach has a working connection and most cafes run Wi-Fi. Good for a call or uploading the morning's photos.

Cam Thanh coconut forest

Mixed

Signal comes and goes among the palms and along the narrow channels. Download the map and the tour details before the basket boat.

My Son sanctuary

Thin

The road out is covered, the ruins less so. Save the ticket, the pickup time and an offline map before you leave town.

From Da Nang airport to Hoi An

Da Nang International Airport is about 28 km north of Hoi An, which Vietnam Tourism puts at roughly a 50 minute drive. Taxis, ride-hailing cars and hotel cars all make the trip, and the airport is on the government's list of international gates that accept an e-visa.

Buses run the route frequently, and the ride is short enough that the airport transfer is the only moment you need to think about it. Turn the eSIM on inside the terminal, check the pickup point, and keep the hotel name in Vietnamese for the driver.

  • Turn the eSIM on before you leave arrivals; the pickup point is outside the terminal.
  • Keep the hotel address in Vietnamese, including the ward.
  • The old town closes several streets to vehicles in the evening, so plan the last block on foot.

Lanterns, tailors and the river

Hoi An was a major Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th to the 19th century, and the Chinese assembly halls, Japanese bridge and Vietnamese shophouses still sit within a few hundred metres of each other. UNESCO inscribed the old town on 12 December 1999.

The phone earns its place here in small ways: a tailor's reference photos, a map through the lanes, a translation for the market and a booking for a lantern boat after dark. The hour after sunset is the reason to stay the night rather than day-trip from Da Nang.

  • Keep tailor measurements and reference photos in one offline album.
  • Screenshot the lantern-boat price and the meeting point before the crowd arrives.
  • Check the weather radar in September to December; the Thu Bon rises in the wet season.

Questions before you fly

How far is Hoi An from Da Nang airport?

About 28 km, roughly a 50 minute drive according to Vietnam Tourism. Taxis, ride-hailing cars and hotel cars all make the trip, and buses run the route frequently.

Is there signal in Hoi An old town?

Yes, 4G holds across the old town and the riverside. Data slows when the evening crowds arrive, so load maps and bookings earlier in the day.

Will my eSIM work at My Son?

The road out is covered and the ruins are patchy. Save the ticket, the pickup time and an offline map before you leave Hoi An, and treat a live connection at the site as a bonus.

Does one eSIM cover Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue?

Yes. A Vietnam plan covers the whole country, so the same eSIM works in Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue and every other stop without a new purchase.
