Your first day, connected

The four moments when a working line changes the day.

  1. Da Nang or Hoi An

Switch the eSIM on before the train or the car. The Hai Van pass is the last place to check the route.

  2. Arriving in Hue

Pin the hotel near the river, then check the opening hours of the citadel for the next day.

  3. The citadel

Download the site map. Walls and halls make a live lookup slower than a screenshot.

  4. Tombs and river

Book the boat or the car in the evening and keep the weather radar open in the wet season.

Where the signal matters in Hue

A guide to the places the phone will be asked to work, and what to download before you get there.

Imperial citadel

Strong

4G works in the open courtyards and along the moat. Inside the halls and the restored gates it slows, so save the map before you enter.

Perfume River

Strong

The riverbank and the boat landings have a reliable connection, which makes the evening crossing a good time to book the next day.

Royal tombs

Mixed

The tombs are spread along the river south and west of the city. Signal comes and goes between the compounds; a downloaded map and a driver's number matter more.

Hai Van pass and the train

Thin

The coastal railway and the pass cut through rock and tunnels. Download the ticket and the route before the train leaves Da Nang.

Arriving in Hue

Hue is on the main north to south railway, and the ride from Da Nang along the coast and over the pass is the reason to take the train rather than the road. The leg runs under three hours through the Hai Van tunnels, and sleeper coaches cover the same corridor by road.

Most visitors arrive from Hoi An, a half day away by road. Wherever you start, turn the eSIM on before you leave: the last stretch of coast is where the signal is thinnest, and the first thing you will want in Hue is a map to the hotel.

  • Screenshot the train ticket, the carriage and the seat number before boarding.
  • Download the Hue map and the citadel area before you arrive.
  • Keep the hotel address in Vietnamese for the driver at the station.

Rain, tombs and the river

About 3,200 mm falls on Hue in a year, and roughly 70 percent of it between September and December. That is the central coast pattern, which runs on its own calendar: dry when the north is wet, wet when the rest of the country is drying out. A weather radar on the phone is more useful here than a forecast read at breakfast.

The royal tombs are spread along the Perfume River, so seeing several means a boat, a car or a motorbike and most of a day. Pick two or three and give them time. The phone holds the map, the opening hours and the driver's number; the rest is the visit.

  • Check the radar before a tomb run; the rain arrives in bands, not all day.
  • Save two or three tombs rather than all of them, with opening hours.
  • Keep a dry bag for the phone on boat trips in the wet season.

Questions before you fly

Is there signal inside the Hue citadel?

Yes in the courtyards and along the moat, and it slows inside the halls and restored gates. Save the site map and the opening hours before you go in.

When does it rain in Hue?

About 3,200 mm falls in a year and roughly 70 percent of it between September and December. The rain arrives in bands, so a weather radar on the phone is more useful than a morning forecast.

Will my eSIM work on the train from Da Nang?

For most of the ride, yes, but the Hai Van tunnels and the cuttings through the rock interrupt it. Download the ticket and the route before boarding and treat the view as the entertainment.

How do I get from Hoi An to Hue?

By road, a half day away, or by train from Da Nang along the coast. Sleeper coaches run the same corridor, and the train is the reason to choose that route.

The same eSIM covers every city on this list.
