A city with a coast, not a coast with a city
The two numbers that describe Quy Nhon are 21.78 square kilometres and 42 kilometres of coastline. A compact city with that much shore attached behaves differently from a resort strip: the beach is where people live, not a zone that visitors are routed into.
Quy Nhon Port sits at the eastern tip and is in use. The city has 129,326 residents as of 2025. Between the working port and the working population, you get a place that is doing something other than hosting you, which is either the appeal or the objection depending on what you came for.
The province changed
Quy Nhon is a ward of Gia Lai province and was that province’s capital. A great deal of material, including current travel writing, places it in Binh Dinh.
That matters at the booking stage rather than on the ground. Search a coach, a train or a room by province and the results may be empty or wrong. Search by the city name.
The Cham layer
Human settlement here stretches back to 11th century Champa culture. Cham brick building is part of the landscape in this part of the coast rather than a day trip out of it, and knowing the period before you arrive changes what you notice.
It also connects this stretch to Hoi An further north, which sits in the same long coastal history of ports, trade and successive rulers.
Getting there and when
Phu Cat Airport serves the city with flights to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The main north to south railway runs through this coast, covered in the Reunification Express, and long distance coaches serve it too, as in sleeper buses in Vietnam. Pleiku is 170 kilometres to the northwest.
