What "activation" actually means for a Vietnam eSIM
Most confusion around Vietnam eSIM activation comes from one word doing two jobs. With a travel eSIM there are two distinct moments:
- Installation — the eSIM profile is downloaded and written to your phone. This is a one-time step and it needs an internet connection, so do it before you travel.
- Activation — the line starts working on a Vietnamese network. Depending on the product, this happens when you enable the eSIM line in your phone settings after landing, or on a schedule set out in the product record.
The network your eSIM connects to, the validity period and the exact activation trigger all come from the product data for the plan you bought — not from a general rule. Read the product record on your plan page before you assume anything about when the clock starts.
Before you fly: the pre-departure checklist
Do this at home, on Wi-Fi, at least a day before departure.
- Check phone compatibility. Your phone must be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. The phone compatibility page lists supported models.
- Install the eSIM using the QR code or manual activation details from your order, following the installation guide.
- Label the line (for example "Vietnam") so you do not switch the wrong SIM later.
- Keep your home SIM active if you want to receive SMS one-time passcodes from your bank.
- Note your APN from the product record, in case you need it.
- Save your order details so you can use order lookup if anything goes wrong.
One practical warning: do not delete the eSIM profile after installing it. A profile that has been removed usually cannot be re-scanned from the same QR code.
On landing: the four settings that matter
Once you are in Vietnam and out of flight mode, work through these in order.
| Setting | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| eSIM line | Enable the Vietnam eSIM in your SIM/eSIM settings | An installed profile that is switched off will never connect |
| Mobile data line | Select the Vietnam eSIM as the line used for mobile data | Phones often default to the primary SIM after a restart |
| Data roaming | Turn roaming on for the Vietnam eSIM line | Travel eSIMs typically connect as a roaming profile; this is normal and does not mean extra charges from us |
| APN | Set the APN exactly as given in the product record, if it is not filled in automatically | A wrong or blank APN is the most common cause of "connected but no internet" |
Give the phone a minute or two, then toggle flight mode on and off once to force a fresh network registration.
If there is still no connection
Work through this in order rather than changing everything at once.
- Confirm the line is on and selected. Re-check the two settings above; a phone restart can reset the data line.
- Check the APN. Re-enter it manually, save, then restart the phone.
- Try manual network selection. Turn off automatic selection and pick an available Vietnamese network, then set it back to automatic.
- Test in a different spot. Indoor coverage in thick-walled buildings can be weak; step outside before concluding anything.
- Check your phone is not still locked to your home carrier.
- Contact support with specifics — phone model, the exact settings you see, and your order number. The help centre has step-by-step troubleshooting guides per platform.
If the plan has not activated at all, the cause is usually that the activation condition in the product record has not been met yet, or the eSIM was installed on an incompatible or locked device.
Activation timing: what to expect
| Situation | Typical behaviour |
|---|---|
| Installed before departure | Profile sits on the phone, no connection until the line is enabled in Vietnam |
| Enabled after landing | Connects to a local network within a few minutes, once settings above are correct |
| Validity period | Defined by the product record for your plan — check it before relying on a start date |
| Reinstalling | Generally not possible from the same QR code once a profile is deleted |
Keeping the first connection stable
- Leave data roaming on for the eSIM line for the whole trip.
- Do not switch your default data line back to your home SIM unless you want roaming charges from your own carrier.
- If you use a VPN, turn it off while troubleshooting.
- Keep the eSIM installed until you are home and certain you no longer need it.
