When is beach season?

There is no single answer, which is the most useful thing on this page. The country crosses three climate regions, and their dry months do not line up. A dry week on one coast can be the wettest week of the year on another.

Why does the weather change at the Hai Van Pass?

Because the pass forms a boundary between the climates of northern and southern Vietnam and shelters Da Nang from northwesterly winds. In winter the north side can be wet and cold while the south side is warm and dry, on the same day.

Which coast is reliable in winter?

The southern coast is in its dry season from roughly December to April, and Mui Ne averages 27 degrees Celsius with a hot dry climate for much of the year. The north is cool and often grey at the same time, and the central coast has its own calendar again.

Does that mean the north is not worth it?

It means the north is a different trip. Ha Long and Lan Ha are about karst seascape rather than lying on sand, and they read well in cool clear weather that would be a disappointing beach day.

There is no beach season, there are three

Vietnam has 3,444 kilometres of coastline along a country 1,650 kilometres from north to south that narrows to about 50 kilometres at its thinnest point. A country that long does not have one climate, and the practical consequence is that “when should I go to the beach” has no single answer.

This is the mistake that ruins beach weeks. A traveller checks a national average, books a coast, and arrives in the one region whose rain is at its annual peak. The fix is to pick the month first and then let the month choose the coast.

The ridge that proves it

The Hai Van Pass forms the boundary between the climates of northern and southern Vietnam, sheltering Da Nang from northwesterly winds. In winter the north side of the pass can be wet and cold while the south side is warm and dry, on the same day and within an hour and a half of driving.

What each coast is for

The north is karst seascape rather than sunbathing. Ha Long and Lan Ha read beautifully in cool clear air that would make a poor beach day, which is covered in Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Island.
The central coast runs on its own calendar, dry when the north is wet and wet from around September to December. Hue takes about 3,200 mm a year on that pattern, as set out in Hue.
The south is in its dry season roughly December to April. Mui Ne averages 27 degrees Celsius and is hot and dry for much of the year, with the wind that built its kitesurfing, in Mui Ne.

Planning it
