Why it is a mixed site
Most World Heritage sites are cultural or natural. Trang An was inscribed as both, on 23 June 2014, under criteria v, vii and viii, which is a short way of saying the limestone and the history cannot be separated here.
The towers are the same tower karst as Ha Long, standing in flooded valleys rather than the sea. Hoa Lu, the capital of Vietnam in the tenth and eleventh centuries, sits among them, and the caves the boats pass through have been used for as long as people have lived in the valleys.
Choosing your boat
- Trang An: longer, more caves, quieter water, and the route most people mean when they talk about the landscape.
- Tam Coc: shorter, along the Ngo Dong river, between rice fields that change colour through the season.
- Hoa Lu: not a boat at all, but the old capital and the reason the place is a cultural site as well as a natural one.
The complex holds more than 600 plant species and 200 animal species across limestone forest and water, which is the part of it that a two hour boat ride does not show you.
Getting there
Ninh Binh sits on the main line and the main road south from Hanoi, so both the railway and the bus platforms serve it densely. The train is booked on the railway’s own site and the buses on platforms like Vexere, both covered in the Reunification Express and sleeper buses in Vietnam.

Timing and signal
The northern pattern applies: cool and dry December to February, wet May to October, with grey drizzle common in March. The rice at Tam Coc is worth timing for if the photograph matters to you. The whole year is in when to go to Vietnam.
