Vietnam visa for Indians: the e-visa, the fee in rupees and the rules

Short answer

Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam, and the e-visa is the usual route: apply at evisa.gov.vn, pay 25 US dollars for single entry or 50 for multiple, and stay up to 90 days. That was about ₹2,400 or ₹4,800 on 24 September 2026. Phu Quoc alone allows 30 days without a visa.

Why this question gets asked so often now

Travel from India to Vietnam has grown quickly. About 500,000 Indian visitors arrived in 2024 and about 746,000 in 2025, a rise of nearly half in one year, which made India Vietnam’s sixth-largest source market. Every one of those passports needed a visa, or a direct flight to Phu Quoc.

Step by step

  1. Open evisa.gov.vn yourself. Typing the address is the simplest defence against the copycat sites that buy search adverts and charge a service fee on top.
  2. Choose single or multiple entry. Single entry suits a trip that enters and leaves once. Multiple entry is worth the extra 25 dollars if you plan to cross into Cambodia or Laos and come back.
  3. Fill in your name exactly as the machine-readable line of your passport shows it, in capitals, with every given name.
  4. Upload a passport-style photograph and a scan of the passport data page.
  5. Give the first address you will stay at and your planned port of entry.
  6. Pay the fee by card through the portal’s own payment gateway.

One rule catches people out: the e-visa must end at least 30 days before your passport expires. If your passport is close to expiry, renew it first.

Visa on arrival, explained honestly

Much of what you will read about visa on arrival for Indians comes from agents selling approval letters. It is a real system, but it is not a walk-up visa: the letter has to be issued before you fly, and the stamp is only available at seven airports. The e-visa gives the same stay at a published fee without a middleman, and it also works at land crossings, which visa on arrival does not.

Phu Quoc, the exception

Phu Quoc island allows every foreign visitor 30 days without a visa, provided they arrive there directly from outside Vietnam. It is a rule for the island, not the country. A beach holiday that never leaves Phu Quoc needs no visa; a trip that continues to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi does. The island itself is covered in our Phu Quoc guide.

Money for the fee, and after

The fee is charged in US dollars, so the rupee amount depends on your card’s exchange rate on the day. What the dong is worth against the rupee, and how to carry money for the trip, is in Vietnamese dong to rupees. The flights themselves are in flights from India to Vietnam.

The full e-visa rules, including the list of accepted border gates, are in the Vietnam e-visa, and the approval-letter system is explained in Vietnam visa on arrival.

If you land with mobile data already working, your e-visa and hotel booking are readable at the immigration desk rather than stuck in an inbox that needs Wi-Fi. The plans are in the Vietnam eSIM store.

We are not a visa agent and take no fee from any visa service. The facts above come from the Immigration Department’s portal, linked at the top.

Questions

Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. India is not on Vietnam's list of visa-exempt passports, so an Indian passport holder needs a visa to enter mainland Vietnam. The e-visa, open to every nationality since 15 August 2023, is the route almost everyone uses. The one exception is a direct arrival on Phu Quoc island.

How much is the Vietnam e-visa in rupees?

The fee is set in US dollars: 25 for single entry and 50 for multiple entry. At the reference rate of 24 September 2026, about ₹95.8 to the dollar, that is roughly ₹2,400 and ₹4,800. Your bank may add a foreign transaction charge on top, and the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

Is there visa on arrival for Indians?

Only with an approval letter arranged before you fly, and only at seven airports. You cannot simply land and buy one. Since the e-visa covers Indian passports for the same 90 days at a published fee, visa on arrival rarely makes sense any more.

Which website is the official one?

evisa.gov.vn and thithucdientu.gov.vn, run by Vietnam's Immigration Department. Search results are full of lookalike sites that charge a service fee on top. Type the address yourself rather than clicking an advert.

Can I visit Phu Quoc without a visa?

Yes, for up to 30 days, if you arrive on Phu Quoc directly from outside Vietnam by air or sea. The rule covers the island only: to continue to the mainland, for example to Ho Chi Minh City, you need a visa.

How early should I apply?

The portal accepts applications from outside Vietnam up to a year before the trip, and you cannot apply once you are in the country. Applying as soon as your dates are firm leaves time to correct a mistake, which matters because a refused fee is not returned.
