Start with the network, not the price
Vietnam runs on three main mobile networks: Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone. A travel eSIM connects to one or more of them. The product record for your chosen plan tells you which network it uses — that is the first thing to read, because coverage in the places you are going depends on it. If you are heading to the northern highlands or the Mekong Delta, network choice matters more than a couple of dollars. For a side-by-side comparison of the three, see Viettel, VinaPhone or MobiFone: how Vietnam's three networks compare.
How much data do you actually need?
Most travellers overestimate. A week of maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload sits comfortably under 5 GB. Add hotspot use for a laptop or a travel companion and it climbs. Streaming video is the outlier — an hour of YouTube is roughly 1 GB.
| Trip style | Typical data need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Long weekend, light use | 3–5 GB | Maps, Grab, messaging |
| 1–2 weeks, normal use | 5–10 GB | Adds social, some video |
| Remote work or hotspot | 10–20 GB+ | Check tethering rules first |
| Heavy streaming | 20 GB+ or unlimited | Read the throttling terms |
If you plan to share your connection, read Vietnam eSIM as a Hotspot: Tethering Rules and How Much Data It Eats before you buy — not every plan allows it.
Activation timing: the trap most people miss
Some eSIMs start their validity clock the moment you buy them. Others start when you first connect to a network in Vietnam. For a trip booked weeks in advance, that difference can cost you the whole plan.
- Buy-to-activate plans suit last-minute trips.
- First-connection plans suit bookings made well ahead.
Check the product record for the plan you are considering. If you want the step-by-step, Vietnam eSIM Activation: How to Install, Activate on Landing and Fix First-Connection Problems covers installation and the common first-connection issues.
Does your phone support eSIM?
iPhone XS and newer support eSIM. Most recent Android flagships do too, but the list is narrower than people assume. Check the compatibility page before buying. If you are on Android, Vietnam eSIM for Android: Setup, Compatibility and the Phones That Work walks through the setup. On iPhone, Vietnam eSIM for iPhone: Compatibility, Dual-SIM and Keeping WhatsApp covers dual-SIM behaviour and keeping your home number active.
Support: the thing you only notice when it breaks
A plan is only as good as the help available when it does not connect. Before buying, check:
- Is there a help centre with setup and troubleshooting guides?
- Can you look up your order if something goes wrong?
- Is support reachable in your time zone?
VietSIM's help centre covers the common questions. If you have already ordered, the order lookup handles the rest.
Price traps to watch for
- Throttled 'unlimited'. Many unlimited plans drop to a slow speed after a daily cap. Vietnam eSIM Unlimited: What "Unlimited Data" Really Means explains the pattern.
- Short activation windows. A 30-day plan that starts on purchase is not a 30-day plan if you bought it a month early.
- No hotspot. Some plans block tethering entirely.
- Data-only vs. voice. Most travel eSIMs are data-only. If you need a local number for calls, read Does a Vietnam eSIM come with a phone number?

A quick decision checklist
Before you tap buy, confirm:
- The plan names the Vietnamese network it uses.
- The data allowance matches your trip length and habits.
- You know when the validity clock starts.
- Hotspot is allowed if you need it.
- Your phone is on the eSIM compatibility list.
- There is a help centre and an order lookup.
- The price includes what you expect — no surprise top-up requirement.
Where to buy
