5G in Vietnam: Which Networks, Where It Reaches and What to Expect

Short answer

Vietnam has commercial 5G from all three major mobile network operators: Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone, with Viettel and Vinaphone holding the widest 5G footprints after several years of rollout. Coverage is strongest in major cities, provincial capitals, industrial zones, airports and key tourist areas, and it is still expanding into rural districts. Travellers do not need a local contract to use it: a 5G-capable phone plus a Vietnam eSIM that runs on a 5G network is enough, provided 5G is switched on in the device settings.

The short version

Vietnam's 5G market is a three-carrier story. Viettel, Vinaphone and MobiFone all sell 5G to consumers, and all three have been adding 5G sites since the first commercial launches in 2020. For a visitor, the practical question is not "does Vietnam have 5G?" but "will my phone and my plan actually let me use it where I am going?"

Which networks run 5G in Vietnam

Operator 5G status Where it matters most
Viettel Commercial 5G, the largest operator by subscribers Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Can Tho, provincial capitals, industrial parks, major airports
Vinaphone Commercial 5G Major cities, transport hubs, selected tourist centres and coastal areas
MobiFone Commercial 5G Urban centres and selected provinces, expanding
Vietnamobile / others No comparable nationwide 5G offer Treat as 4G-first

Vietnam's 5G spectrum has been allocated through state-run auctions, and the operators have published rollout milestones over several years. The exact site count changes month to month, so treat any specific number you read — including on this page — as a snapshot rather than a promise.

Where 5G reaches in practice

Coverage follows a familiar pattern:

  1. Big cities first. Central Hanoi, central Ho Chi Minh City (District 1, Thu Duc, the airport corridor), Da Nang and Hai Phong have the densest 5G grids.
  2. Transport and business hubs. International airports, major railway stations, seaports and industrial zones are prioritised because they carry high traffic.
  3. Tourist centres. Beach and heritage destinations such as Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc and Ha Long see 5G in the built-up and resort areas, not necessarily on every stretch of coastline.
  4. Provincial towns and rural districts. 4G is the reliable baseline here; 5G appears progressively.

If your trip is a city-and-resort itinerary, expect 5G most of the time. If it is a motorbike loop through the northern mountains or the Mekong Delta's smaller lanes, plan for 4G as your working connection and treat 5G as a bonus.

What 5G actually changes for a traveller

5G is not a different internet — it is a faster, lower-latency path to the same internet. In Vietnam that translates into:

  • Smoother video calls and live streaming from the road
  • Faster uploads of photos and reels to social platforms
  • Quicker map tile loading and ride-hailing app refreshes
  • Better performance in crowded places such as airports and festivals, where 4G cells get congested

It does not change roaming rules, and it does not make a weak signal strong. If a district has no 5G site, your phone falls back to 4G or 3G automatically.

Do you need a 5G phone and a 5G plan?

Yes — both. 5G requires:

  • A 5G-capable handset. Mid-range and flagship phones from the last few years generally qualify, but check your exact model in our phone compatibility guide.
  • A plan that includes 5G access. Some prepaid products are 4G-only, even on a 5G network. The network, validity and activation details of any plan you buy come from that plan's own product record — read it before you buy.
  • 5G enabled in settings. On many phones 5G is off by default to save battery. Look under mobile network settings and choose 5G or "5G/LTE auto".

Getting 5G as a visitor

A Vietnam eSIM is the simplest route: you install it before you fly, it activates when it connects in Vietnam, and there is no shop visit or passport registration queue. Choose a plan that runs on a 5G network, then confirm your phone supports the bands that network uses.

Before you travel:

  • Phone is carrier-unlocked
  • Phone is 5G-capable and 5G is enabled in settings
  • eSIM installed and labelled (for example "Vietnam")
  • Data roaming switched on for the eSIM line if your setup requires it
  • A screenshot of your order details saved offline

If anything misbehaves on arrival, our help centre covers installation, activation and troubleshooting step by step.

5G vs 4G: a quick decision table

Your situation 4G is enough 5G is worth having
Messaging, maps, email, web browsing ✅ —
Video calls and cloud backups Sometimes ✅
Live streaming or heavy uploads — ✅
Remote work with large file transfers — ✅
Rural and mountain routes ✅ (baseline) Only where available

Practical expectations

  • Speeds vary by load, distance from the cell and the bands in use. No operator guarantees a number, and neither do we.
  • Indoor coverage is weaker than outdoor. Thick walls, basements and some older buildings attenuate 5G more than 4G.
  • Battery drain is real. If you are out all day, 5G can cost you battery; switching to 4G/LTE auto when you do not need speed is a reasonable trade.
  • Your home operator's roaming may not include 5G. Many roaming agreements are 4G-only, which is one reason a local eSIM often performs better than roaming.

If you are a Vietnamese subscriber comparing plans

If you live in Vietnam and are choosing between carrier packages rather than buying a travel eSIM, the relevant question is which plan code includes 5G access, how much data it carries and how long it lasts. Our Vietnamese plan catalogue lists packages by their exact codes as sold — for example V90B — so you can compare like for like before topping up through your carrier's own channels.

Bottom line

Vietnam's 5G is real, commercially available and concentrated where travellers spend most of their time. Bring a 5G phone, pick a plan whose product record confirms 5G, and you will spend most of a city-and-resort trip on the faster network — with 4G as a dependable fallback everywhere else.
